U9s start 2017 with a victory

Wargrave started their summer campaign with a solid all round win over local rivals Sonning - scoring more runs from the bat, taking more wickets and conceding fewer extras. 2 evenly matched teams played a really good competitive game in the nice sunshine and both sides played some really good cricket.

Wargrave opened the batting scoring a net 249 run for the loss of 7 wickets, 38 runs from the bat and 46 extras. Fin (8), Sam & Bruno (7) and Matty (6) top scored with the bat with Fin not losing his wicket (well done Fin) to overall top the scoring. Everyone contributed and it was nice to see 4 players not losing wickets, very few runs outs and some excellent running especially from Toby and Matty. There was good communication and very few instances of panic and confusion which was great to see.

In the field the boys really excelled – ‘very well drilled’ their coach commented (well done Neal and the team!) taking 9 wickets and 42 extras conceded. Eddie almost grabbed a hat trick and bowled really well and nice to see Ali and Seb picking up their first wickets for the club. Many more to come hopefully! Seb did the best fielding of the day with a nice catch and a great diving stop, stopping a certain boundary and 2 good wicket keeper catches (Sam / Toby) with Bruno, Ryan Fin and Sam also picking up wickets and good backing up to stop any over throws. This kept Sonning to 231 for the loss of 9 wickets with 42 extras.

So a really good all round performance by everyone and all players showing improvement on last year and contributing positively to the game with wickets, catches and runs being well spread around. Need to keep focus on limiting the extras, always stay switched on in the field for possible catches and being a bit sharper on the throws to the wicket keeper…and believe we will bat better with a bit more confidence. Toby picked up MoM for his enthusiasm and focus. Good work boys!
